Beineinu August 2025

In Pirkei Avot, Rabbi Tarfon teaches: “The day is short, the work is great, the laborers are idle, the reward is much, and the Master of the house is pressing.” I don’t think he had synagogue life in mind, but I can’t imagine a better description of the Jewish calendar in August.

This is the gearing-up month, when we turn from the mournful strains of Tisha B’Av to the shofar blasts of Elul and beyond. At Temple Beth Sholom, this means a season of holy work is happening: preparing for the High Holidays, building Sukkot, launching another year of religious school and adult learning, checking in on our seniors, creating a new website, and making sure every congregant feels seen.

Some folks have mentioned that my online calendar tool feels impersonal or hard to navigate. I get that. The truth is you don’t need a link to make an appointment with me. I’m proud to be one of the most accessible rabbis in North America, often able to meet within 15 minutes of a call. My cell number is in the directory; you can call or text me. You can call the office, and we’ll schedule a time. We’re a kehilla kedosha, a holy community. Making time for each other is a sacred effort I am committed to this year and every year.

As we turn toward Av and Elul, may we do so together. May we be present for each other, curious, candid, and open to the changes we'll commit to when Tishrei and our High Holy Days arrive.
